چکیده

We consider task planning problems where a number of noncooperative agents have to work on a joint problem. Such a problem consists in completing a set of interdependent, hierarchically ordered tasks. Each agent is assigned a subset of tasks to perform for which it has to construct a plan. Since the agents are non-cooperative, they insist on planning independently and do not want to revise their individual plans when the joint plan has to be assemled from the individual plans. We present a formal framework to study some computational aspects of this non-cooperative coordination problem.

Investigating Strategies for Cooperative Planning of Independent Agents through Prototype Evaluation

This paper discusses the application of the prototyping approach to investigating the requirements on strategies for cooperative planning and con ict resolution of independent agents by means of an example application: the strategic game \Scotland Yard". The strategies for coordinating the agents, which are parallel algorithms, are developed with a prototyping approach using ProSet-Linda. ProSe...

Generalizing the Partial Global Planning Algorithm

The distributed coordination problem can be described as how should the local scheduling of activities at each agent be affected by non-local concerns and constraints. Partial global planning (PGP) is a flexible approach to distributed coordination that allows agents to respond dynamically to their current situation. It is based on detecting relationships in the computational goal structures of...

Framework and Complexity Results for Coordinating Non-cooperative Planning Agents

In multi-agent planning problems agents are requested to jointly solve a complex task consisting of a set of interrelated tasks. Since none of the agents is capable to solve the whole task on its own, usually each of them is assigned to a subset of tasks. If agents are dependent upon each other via interrelated tasks they are assigned to, moderately-coupled teams of agents are called for. Such ...

Multi-Agent Planning for Non-Cooperative Agents

At least three major subproblems can be distinguished in a multi-agent planning problem: a task allocation problem (which agent performs which subtasks), an individual planning problem for each of the agents involved (how to ensure that the tasks allocated to me can be performed), and a plan coordination problem (how to ensure that the individual planning processes can be integrated into an ove...

Multi-Agent Learning in Non-Cooperative Domains

Motivation Previous work in coordination (Bond & Gasser 1988) on multi-agent systems are specific either to cooperative or non-coperative problem domains. Previous work in learning in multi-agent systems have considered agents operating to solve a cooperative task with explicit information sharing and negotiations (Wei 1993, Tan 1993). In a companion paper (Sen, Sekaran, & Hale 1994) we describ...
